As of Monday, Jan. 25, 2021, Oregon educators — including public and private K-12 educators and staff, early childhood educators and staff, and child care providers and staff — can begin getting vaccinated against COVID-19. This is an important milestone in our long journey to reopen schools safely for our students, staff and communities during the pandemic.
OEA members should have already begun receiving information about vaccination opportunities from the Oregon Health Authority, education and school officials through the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Early Learning Division, as well as other vaccination partners. Some counties are sharing vaccination events, which are listed in the events calendar on the Oregon Health Authority's vaccination look-up site.
Where to Go to Get Vaccinated
OHA's Vaccine-by-County lookup tool will help you find a vaccination site in your community. If you have further questions, reach out to your employer or local county health authority for information on where to get vaccinated.
How do we know the COVID-19 vaccines are safe? Developers of these vaccines followed all steps the FDA normally requires for vaccine production. The only difference is that the COVID-19 vaccines were given priority review and moved to the front of the production line. Here is an information sheet from Moda Health about the typical stages of vaccine development and the accelerated COVID-19 vaccine development.
In public health emergencies, the vaccine development process may be prioritized and expedited. This was the case with COVID-19. The U.S. government brought government agencies, international counterparts, academia, nonprofit organizations, and pharmaceutical companies together to develop a coordinated strategy. The government was also allowed to invest in the necessary manufacturing capacity which made it possible for companies to develop and distribute the vaccines faster than normal.
