Truth Decay: How Lies and Disinformation Harm Transgender Children and Youth [Online]
May 6, 2022 · 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Add to your calendarNever before in history have we seen the kind of coordinated political and religiously motivated hate campaigns directed at trans and nonbinary children, youth, and their families that are taking place today.
The campaigns directly target trans and nonbinary children, youth, and their families, and have gained popularity in the rise of ‘Trumpism’, far-right ideologies, and manufactured social justice wedge issues. Examples of this include proposed restrictions for trans athletes, “bathroom bills”, and access to health care. In 2021, bills prohibiting health care for trans youth were introduced in more than 20 states [1], with more than 30 states introducing restrictions on trans athletes [2]. At least 7 states proposed anti-trans bills in first week of 2022 alone.
Through examining historical video, literature and world events, this workshop will explore how coordinated political/religious hate campaigns have evolved since the 1950’s–using fear, lies, disinformation, and ‘traditional family values’ as entry points for marginalizing and oppressing vulnerable minority populations based on race, sexual orientation, and gender identity/expression.
Participants will revisit racist political/extremist religious attacks in our countries history, and draw parallels to the attacks on LGBTQI+ and transgender rights seen today.
