716 OEA member-delegates from across Oregon gathered at OEA's annual Representative Assembly (RA) to elect new leaders, review OEA programs, reform bylaws and policies, propose new business items, attend caucus meetings, and celebrate member achievements.
OEA-RA delegates at the OEA elected current OEA Vice President Gail Rasmussen to the office of President in an uncontested race. Rasmussen will begin her term in July after the second term expires of current OEA President Larry Wolf.
Rasmussen has served two terms as OEA Vice President, first elected to the office in 2005. Her election is historic for OEA on two counts: she is the first classified employee to be elected to the highest OEA office, she will also be the first African-American to serve as OEA President.
Delegates also elected Hanna Vaandering to the office of Vice President, re-elected Karen Watters as NEA Director, and Janet Sanders to Education Support Professional Director.

OEA-RA 2008 took place April 18-19 at the Red Lion Inn at Jantzen Beach in Portland, Oregon. This year held 658 registered delegates. OEA Awards Banquet Honors Public Education Employees
The Oregon Education Association (OEA), the state’s largest public school employee organization, honored eight members and one Local Association at its annual Awards Banquet, April 19, 2008 at the Red Lion Inn on the River in Portland.
Don Colgan, an elementary school teacher from Springfield, and Deb Wiskow, an elementary school teacher in the South Lane school district, were awarded the Robert G. Crumpton Organizational Excellence Award for promoting organizational excellence through long-time service to the OEA.
Margaret Calvert, a high school math specialist in the Portland public school district, received the Excellence in Education Award for outstanding accomplishments toward educational excellence for all students.
Rhonda Antley, an administrative assistant at Pelican Elementary school in Klamath Falls, was awarded the Kevin Forney Educational Support Professional Award. The award honors individuals whose activities reflect the contribution of education support professionals to public education in Oregon.
Karla Porter, a bus driver for the North Wasco school district, was honored with the Willie Juhola Award for dedication, commitment and a positive work ethic in serving and representing education support professionals in the Association.
The Glide Education Association, representing the 47 educators working in the Glide school district, and Jane Morgan, a librarian at Ockley Green Middle School in Portland, were awarded the OEA Political Action Award. They are being recognized for their long-time political advocacy on behalf of teachers, students, and public education.
Kara Tison, a special education teacher at Sam Barlow High School in Gresham, was awarded the Ruth E. Greiner Membership Award. The award recognizes the contributions of an OEA member who has significantly recruited and inspired new members to get involved at the state or local level.
The first-ever Deanna Conner Community College Award, which recognizes the contributions of a community college member who has been a strong advocate for Oregon’s community colleges, was awarded to Tim Pantages, a Clackamas Community College faculty member.
