What happens when a diabetic student needs insulin at school, or a medically fragile student needs direct care? In Oregon, where many schools lack a school nurse, student care often falls to teachers and support staff. School nurses Carol Cochran (left) and Nina Fekaris (right) aim to make that job as easy as possible, by providing staff with information and training to care for kids.

Oregon's Quality Education Model specifies a funding level of more than $7 billion for K-12 schools in the 2007-2009 budget to ensure 90 percent of students will meet state standards. $6.2 billion was approved for 2007-2009.
